Tariff and duty exposure modeling

With tariffs shifting, an importer needed to see duty exposure by product and country and model the cost of a rate change before it landed.

Result

A proposed tariff change could be priced into the sourcing decision within the hour instead of after the quarter closed.

The challenge

When a tariff changed, finance scrambled through spreadsheets to estimate the hit, and the answer arrived days later with no way to test sourcing alternatives.

What we built

We built a duty exposure model over HTS codes, country of origin, and spend, with a scenario layer that reprices the book under a proposed tariff and compares sourcing options.

  • Duty exposure by HTS code, country of origin, supplier, and product line.
  • A scenario tool that models a rate change and reprices the import book.
  • A sourcing comparison that ranks alternatives by total landed cost.

Outcomes

  • Exposure to any tariff change is known the same day it is announced.
  • Sourcing alternatives are compared on landed cost, not list price.
  • Finance answers leadership with a number, not an estimate.
