Ask three firms what a custom ERP costs and you will get three answers an order of magnitude apart, all of them defensible. The reason is that "ERP" describes anything from a single-purpose operations app to a platform running finance, inventory, procurement, and manufacturing across dozens of sites. - Finance and accounting: general ledger, AP/AR, multi-entity, and reporting. Cost rises with tax complexity, multi-currency, and audit requirements.
- Inventory and warehousing: locations, lots, serials, and cycle counts. Barcode and mobile scanning add integration work.

A packaged ERP like NetSuite, SAP, or Dynamics comes with modules out of the box, but you pay per user, per year, forever, and you still pay to configure it to your business. NetSuite is a useful yardstick because its structure is public in outline: a base platform fee that starts around $999 per month plus roughly $129 to $199 per user per month, on top of a one-time implementation that commonly runs from $25,000 into the six figures. Oracle also raised its full-user license from $99 to $129 per month in 2025, a reminder that the per-seat meter is set by the vendor and moves in one direction.
Run those numbers at scale. Fifty full users at $150 each is $90,000 a year in seats alone, before modules, before the base fee, before implementation, and that bill repeats every year and grows with headcount. Custom flips the model. Higher upfront build, no per-seat license, and you own the code and the direction.
